Switch out of S mode
Leaving Windows 11 in S mode so you can install apps from outside the Microsoft Store

Windows 11 in S mode only runs apps from the Microsoft Store, so it blocks the Office Deployment Tool and any other app installed from a download. Switching out takes a few minutes through the Microsoft Store. Microsoft says "There's no charge to switch out of S mode, but you won't be able to turn it back on."
Check whether the PC is in S mode
Open Settings > System > About. Under Windows specifications, the edition reads Windows 11 Home in S mode or Windows 11 Pro in S mode.
Switch out
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Find the Switch to Windows 11 Pro section, or Switch to Windows 11 Home on a Home PC, and select Go to the Store.
- Use that link only. Microsoft's warning is "Don't select the link under Upgrade your edition of Windows. That's a different process that will keep you in S mode."
- On the Switch out of S mode page that opens in the Microsoft Store, select Get and confirm.
Apps from outside the Store can be installed as soon as the switch completes.
After switching
Check Settings > Apps > Advanced app settings. If Choose where to get apps is still on The Microsoft Store only, change it to Anywhere, as described in The app you're trying to install isn't a Microsoft-verified app.
Microsoft's page About Windows 11 in S mode has more detail.
