Install Office 2024 Professional Plus or Standard
Installing Office LTSC 2024 on Windows with Microsoft's Office Deployment Tool

Last Update 10 days ago
Office LTSC 2024 has no ordinary installer to double-click. It installs with the Office Deployment Tool, a free command-line tool from Microsoft. You save a short configuration file with the edition, the language and your product key, run one command, and the tool downloads Office from Microsoft, installs it and activates it.
Allow about a quarter of an hour plus the download, which runs to a few gigabytes.
Before you start
- Remove every other version of Office from the PC, as described in Remove older versions of Office before installing.
- Sign in to Windows with an account that has administrator rights.
- Have your product key from the delivery email to hand.
- Keep the PC connected to the internet for the download and the activation.
Download the Office Deployment Tool
- Download the tool from the Office Deployment Tool page of the Microsoft Download Center. Microsoft's advice is to "Always download and use the latest version of the ODT," so get a fresh copy even if you saved one before.
- Create a folder called ODT on the C drive.
- Run the file you downloaded, accept the licence terms and extract it into C:\ODT. The folder then holds setup.exe and a few sample configuration files, which you can ignore.
Create the configuration file
Open Notepad and paste the version for your edition. Both install the 64-bit apps in English (United Kingdom).
For Office 2024 Professional Plus
For Office 2024 Standard
Replace the X's with your 25-character product key and keep the hyphens between the groups.
Save the file in C:\ODT as configuration.xml. In Notepad's Save As window, set Save as type to All files before you save. Left on Text documents, Notepad names the file configuration.xml.txt and setup can't find it.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| OfficeClientEdition="64" | Installs the 64-bit apps. Use 32 for 32-bit. |
| Channel="PerpetualVL2024" | Sets the update channel for Office LTSC 2024. Leave it as it is. |
| Product ID | ProPlus2024Volume installs Professional Plus and Standard2024Volume installs Standard. It has to match the edition of your key. |
| PIDKEY | Holds your product key. |
| Language ID="en-gb" | Installs English (United Kingdom). Install Office in another language lists other codes. |
| RemoveMSI | Removes Office 2016 or older that was installed with Windows Installer. |
| AUTOACTIVATE set to 1 | Activates Office with your key as soon as the installation finishes. |
| Display Level="Full" | Shows the normal progress window. |
| AcceptEULA="TRUE" | Accepts the licence terms so setup doesn't stop to ask. |
To leave out an app you don't want, add an ExcludeApp line inside the Product section, before the line that closes it. This one leaves out Access.
The IDs for the Office LTSC 2024 apps are Access, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word, and Lync covers Skype for Business in Professional Plus. Microsoft's reference for the configuration options lists every ID.
Run the installation
- Open the Start menu and type cmd.
- Right-click Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator and select Yes.
- Run these two commands.
The Office installer window opens and shows its progress while it downloads and installs the apps. When it finishes, the window closes and the command prompt comes back.
Check that it worked
Open Word and go to File > Account. Under Product Information it should say Product Activated, with Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 or Office LTSC Standard 2024 underneath. If it asks for activation, follow Activate Office 2024 with your product key.
Installing on several PCs from one download
Each PC needs its own licence and its own key. The download itself only has to happen once.
1. On the first PC, run this command to save the installation files into an Office folder inside C:\ODT.
2. Add SourcePath="C:\ODT" to the Add line of the configuration file. Microsoft notes that "The SourcePath value shouldn't include the /Office part," so point it at the ODT folder and not at the Office folder inside it.
3. Copy the whole ODT folder to the C drive of each PC.
4. On each PC, put that PC's own product key in the PIDKEY value, then run the configure command from an administrator Command Prompt.
3. Copy the whole ODT folder to the C drive of each PC.
4. On each PC, put that PC's own product key in the PIDKEY value, then run the configure command from an administrator Command Prompt.
If setup stops
| What you see | Where to go |
|---|---|
| Error 0-2048 | Office error 0-2048 |
| Error 0-2054 | Office error 0-2054 |
| Nothing happens when you run setup.exe | Double-clicking setup.exe doesn't install Office |
| Windows says the app isn't Microsoft-verified | The app you're trying to install isn't a Microsoft-verified app |
| The progress bar stops moving | Office installation is stuck or slow |
| Any other code | Other Office installation errors |
