The app you're trying to install isn't a Microsoft-verified app
Letting setup run when Windows only accepts apps from the Microsoft Store

Windows shows this message when it's set to accept apps from the Microsoft Store only. That has one of two causes. Either the Choose where to get apps setting is on The Microsoft Store only, or the PC is running Windows 11 in S mode, which only allows apps from the Store. The Office Deployment Tool comes from Microsoft's Download Center, so Windows stops it.
Change where apps can come from
- Open Settings > Apps > Advanced app settings.
- Open the list next to Choose where to get apps and select Anywhere.
- Run setup again.
The list has four options.
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Anywhere | Installs apps from any source |
| Anywhere, but let me know if there's a comparable app in the Microsoft Store | Installs from any source and suggests a Store app where there is one |
| Anywhere, but warn me before installing an app that's not from the Microsoft Store | Installs from any source after a warning |
| The Microsoft Store only | Blocks everything outside the Store, which causes this message |
Any of the first three lets setup run.
If the setting is locked or missing
Check whether the PC is in S mode. Settings > System > About shows the edition, and in S mode it reads Windows 11 Home in S mode or Windows 11 Pro in S mode. S mode always limits the PC to Store apps, whatever the setting says. Switching out is free and permanent, and Switch out of S mode has the steps.
On a PC managed by an employer or a school, the setting can be locked by the organisation's policies. The person who manages the PC can change it.
