Office LTSC Standard for Mac 2024 activates with the Volume License Serializer, a small installer package. Microsoft describes it as "a package (.pkg) file that you run on a Mac where Office is installed", and for this release the file is named Microsoft_Office_LTSC_2024_VL_Serializer.pkg. Run it once and the Office apps open already activated, with no product key to type and no Microsoft account needed.
Run the serializer
- Install the Office apps first, as described in Install Office 2024 for Mac.
- Quit every Office app.
- Open the serializer .pkg file, following the instructions in your delivery email.
- Select Continue, then Install, and enter the Mac's administrator password.
- Select Close when it finishes.
- Open Word. Microsoft's description is that "your Mac users won't see any activation prompts when they first open their copy of Office."
The licence belongs to this Mac
The serializer writes a licence file to the Mac. Microsoft explains that the file "contains data that's encrypted by using the serial number of the boot drive on the device where it was generated", so a copy of it activates nothing on any other Mac. One licence covers one Mac.
Moving up from Office LTSC for Mac 2021
The 2024 serializer can run on a Mac that has Office LTSC for Mac 2021, while people carry on working. Microsoft says that "After users close and reopen the app, Office switches to the Office LTSC for Mac 2024 license." The apps need to be on version 16.89 or later, which is where Microsoft's version numbers for Office LTSC for Mac 2024 begin. Check under Word > About Word.
If Word asks you to sign in or activate
The serializer hasn't taken effect, or another licence on the Mac is taking priority. Follow Office for Mac keeps asking you to activate or sign in.
