Your key doesn't work on setup.office.com
Why volume licence keys aren't redeemed on Microsoft's setup page, and where they go instead

setup.office.com, which also opens at microsoft365.com/setup, is Microsoft's page for redeeming retail product keys to a Microsoft account. Microsoft describes redeeming as "a one-time process that adds your new product to your Microsoft account", after which "you'll use your Microsoft account, not your product key, to install and activate Office apps". Our Office 2024 products for Windows and Mac are volume licensed, and volume licences don't go through that page. The Office 365 Pro Account doesn't use it either, because it comes as an account and not a key.
A refusal on that page doesn't mean anything is wrong with the key. The key goes into Office itself, once Office has been installed with the Office Deployment Tool.
Where each key goes
- Office 2024 Professional Plus or Standard for Windows. The key goes in the PIDKEY value of the configuration file, or in Word under File > Account > Change Product Key.
- Office 2024 Standard for Mac. There's no key to enter. The Volume License Serializer activates the Mac.
- Office 365 Pro Account, 5 Devices. There's no key. Sign in at m365.cloud.microsoft/apps with the account email address and password from your delivery email, as Set up your Office 365 Pro Account explains.
- Project 2024 Professional for Windows. A retail key goes to microsoft365.com/setup, and a volume key goes into the configuration file for the Office Deployment Tool, as your delivery email explains.
- Visio 2024 Professional for Windows. A retail key goes to microsoft365.com/setup, and a volume key goes into the configuration file you make with the Office Customization Tool, as your delivery email explains.
- Windows 11 Pro. The key goes in Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.
No Microsoft account needed for Office LTSC
Office LTSC 2024 activates with its key and runs without anyone signing in. Signing in to Office with a Microsoft account is only needed for services such as OneDrive, and it doesn't affect the activation.
Follow Install Office 2024 Professional Plus or Standard to install, then Activate Office 2024 with your product key if Office doesn't activate itself.
