Office 2024 or Microsoft 365
How a one-time Office LTSC 2024 licence compares with a Microsoft 365 subscription

Office LTSC 2024 is a one-time licence for one device, with security updates until 9 October 2029 and nothing to renew. Microsoft 365 is a subscription for one person, with new features every month and, depending on the plan, cloud services such as email, Teams and OneDrive storage. The right choice depends on whether you need those services, and on how many people and computers you have.
Per device against per user
Office LTSC 2024 licenses a device. One licence covers one PC or Mac, and anyone who sits at it can use Office.
Microsoft 365 licenses a person. One Microsoft 365 Apps for business licence lets that person install Office on up to five PCs or Macs, five tablets and five phones.
Count your people and your computers before you compare. A workshop with two shared PCs and six people taking turns needs two LTSC licences, or six Microsoft 365 licences. Someone who works on a desktop in the office and a laptop at home needs two LTSC licences, or one Microsoft 365 licence.
What only Microsoft 365 includes
Microsoft's overview of Office LTSC 2024 puts it this way. "Office LTSC 2024 doesn't include the latest cloud-backed features and functionality available in Microsoft 365 Apps."
- New features every month, where Office LTSC 2024 stays on its 2024 feature set
- Copilot, on the plans that include it
- 1 TB of OneDrive storage per user
- Business email and Teams, on the Business Basic, Standard and Premium plans
What Office LTSC 2024 gives you
- One payment per computer, with nothing to renew
- No sign-in needed to keep the apps working, and no connection needed once Office is activated
- Menus and features that stay the same until 2029
- Security updates until 9 October 2029
- Access, in the Professional Plus edition for Windows
Our Office 365 Pro Account
We also sell the Office 365 Pro Account, a preconfigured Microsoft 365 account. It includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Access on Windows, Teams subject to the account's entitlements, and 100 GB of OneDrive storage, and Outlook isn't included. The supplier advertises it for up to five devices, across Windows PCs, Macs, tablets and phones.
It works the way Microsoft 365 does, licensed to the account and not to a device. Access depends on the Microsoft 365 subscription behind the account staying active, as the product page explains. Its apps and Office LTSC 2024 can't be installed on the same Windows PC, because Microsoft's rule is "You can't have a mix of update channels on the same device."
Using both
Office LTSC 2024 connects to Microsoft 365 services, so an office can pair it with a Microsoft 365 plan that provides email and Teams without the desktop apps. Microsoft supports that connection until 9 October 2029. Teams is a separate download, as Install Microsoft Teams explains.
Our blog's comparison of Office LTSC 2024 and Microsoft 365 works through Microsoft's UK prices to 2029.
