Project won't install alongside Office

Matching architecture, version and update channel so Project and Office can share a PC

Project and Office share the Click-to-Run installation on a PC, so Microsoft has rules for running them together. They must use the same architecture and the same update channel, and two Click-to-Run products of different versions can't share overlapping apps. When one of those rules is broken, Project setup stops with an error.
Microsoft's rules
  • "All installed products must match in bit (32-bit or 64-bit) version."
  • "Products installed on the same computer must use the same update channel."
  • "You can't install two products of different versions if both use Click-to-Run and have overlapping Office applications."
  • With Microsoft 365 Apps, Project 2024 "Requires Version 2408 of Microsoft 365 Apps or later", and "Volume licensed Project and Visio installations must be configured to use the same update channel as Microsoft 365 Apps."
Which combinations work

Office LTSC 2024 Professional Plus or StandardWorks. Both use the PerpetualVL2024 channel. Match the architecture
Microsoft 365 Apps, version 2408 or laterWorks, with Project set to the same update channel as Microsoft 365 Apps
Office LTSC 2021 or Office 2019 volume licensedDoesn't meet Microsoft's same channel rule, because each uses its own perpetual channel
Steps
  1. Check the Office architecture in Word, under File > Account > About Word.
  2. In your Project configuration file, set OfficeClientEdition to the same value, 64 or 32.
  3. Set the Channel to PerpetualVL2024 when the PC has Office LTSC 2024.
  4. Use en-us as the Project language.
  5. Uninstall any older version of Project and restart.
  6. Run setup again from an administrator Command Prompt.
