Windows activation error codes

What the common Windows 11 activation codes mean, and what to do for each one

Almost every Windows 11 activation error comes from one of six causes. The key is invalid or already used, the key doesn't match the installed edition, the hardware has changed, the PC can't reach Microsoft's activation service, Windows is looking for an organisation's KMS server, or a command needed administrator rights. Find your code in the table, then go to the section for its group.
Only the first group needs us. The others can be sorted out on the PC.

Key errors
0xC004F050 means Windows doesn't accept the key, and Microsoft puts it down to a typing mistake or a beta key used on a released version of Windows. Check each group of five characters, and type the key by hand if you pasted it.
0xC004C003 comes back from Microsoft's activation servers. Microsoft's consumer help page says "You may see this error because the Windows 11 product key you entered isn't valid," and its troubleshooting guide gives the message for the same code as "The activation server determined the specified product key is blocked."
0xC004C008, 0xC004C770 and 0x803FA071 all mean, in Microsoft's words, that "the product key has already been used on another device".
None of these can be changed from the PC. Contact us with your order number, the error code and a screenshot of the Activation page, and we check the key under our Return Policy.
Edition errors
A Windows 11 Pro key activates Windows 11 Pro. When the installed edition is something else, one of these codes appears.
  • 0xC004F212 means "The product key used on this device isn't compatible with this edition of Windows." It usually follows a reinstall with the wrong edition.
  • 0xC004F210 and 0xC004F034 mean the key belongs to a different edition or version.
  • 0xC004E016 reports the same mismatch.
  • 0xC004F00F appears when a key for the Enterprise edition is entered on Windows 11 Home or Pro.
  • 0x803FA067 sits with the invalid key codes on Microsoft's help page, and it's often reported when an upgrade from Home to Pro doesn't go through.
Check the edition in Settings > System > About. If it says Home and you have a Pro key, use Change product key on the Activation page, which upgrades Home to Pro in place. Upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro has the steps.
Hardware errors
0xC004F211, 0xC004F213, 0x803F7001 and 0x800704CF follow a major hardware change, such as a new motherboard, or a clean installation on changed hardware. Reactivate Windows after a hardware change shows how to use the Activation troubleshooter.
Network and server errors
  • 0x80072F8F appears, according to Microsoft, "if the date and time for the device is incorrect". Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, turn on Set time automatically, select Sync now and try again.
  • 0xC004FC03 points to the internet connection or a firewall. If the network blocks activation, use Activate Windows when online activation doesn't work.
  • 0x8007267C means there's no connection, or the activation server is temporarily unavailable.
  • 0x87E10BC6 points to Microsoft's activation server or licensing service. Wait a few minutes, run the Activation troubleshooter from the Activation page and try again.
  • 0xD0000272, 0xC0000272, 0xC004C012, 0xC004C013 and 0xC004C014 mean the activation server is temporarily unavailable. Windows activates by itself once the service is back.
  • 0xC004E028 means a request is already being processed. Give it a few minutes.
KMS errors
0xC004F074, 0x8007007B and 0x8007232B come from KMS, the activation system larger organisations run on their own networks. On a home or small office PC, they mean Windows has a KMS client key installed and keeps looking for a KMS server that isn't there.
Run slmgr /dlv and look for VOLUME_KMSCLIENT, and check the edition on the same screen. A Pro key won't activate an Enterprise installation, so the edition has to be Pro. If it is Pro, replace the key with your own from a Command Prompt opened as administrator.
Permission and general errors
  • 0x80070005 is "Access denied. The requested action requires elevated privileges." Run the command again from a Command Prompt opened with Run as administrator.
  • 0xC004E003 can appear after third-party software has changed system files. Microsoft suggests restoring the PC to an earlier System Restore point.
  • 0x80004005 is a general error. Run the Activation troubleshooter first.
Our blog's guide to Windows 11 activation error codes covers each code with more background.
