Install Visio Professional 2024
The volume licence route through the Office Customization Tool, and the retail route through a Microsoft account

Visio Professional 2024 installs in one of two ways, and your delivery email says which one your key uses. A volume licence installs with Microsoft's Office Deployment Tool, from a configuration file that Microsoft's Office Customization Tool builds for you. A retail key is redeemed to a Microsoft account, and Visio installs from that account.
Before you start
- Visio 2024 runs on Windows only. Microsoft lists Windows 11, Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019 as supported.
- Visio has to use the same architecture as the Office on the PC, so both 32-bit or both 64-bit. In Word, File > Account > About Word shows which one you have.
- Uninstall any older version of Visio first, in Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
- If the PC has Office LTSC 2024 and your email says your Visio key is retail, contact us before you install. Visio won't install alongside Office explains why.
Volume licence route
Microsoft's deployment guide for Visio uses the Office Deployment Tool for Visio LTSC 2024, and it recommends making the configuration file with the Office Customization Tool. The Customization Tool writes the file from the options you choose, so there's no code to type. Work through the next three sections in order.
Get the Office Deployment Tool
- Download the tool from the Office Deployment Tool page of the Microsoft Download Center. Microsoft's advice is to "Always download and use the latest version of the ODT," so get a fresh copy even if you installed Office with it before.
- Create a folder called ODT on the C drive, if it isn't there already.
- Run the file you downloaded, accept the licence terms and extract it into C:\ODT.
Make the configuration file
- Open Microsoft's Office Customization Tool.
- Under Products and releases, choose the architecture of the Office on the PC, 64-bit or 32-bit.
- Leave Office Suites empty and choose Visio LTSC Professional 2024 in the Visio list, as Microsoft's deployment guide for Visio advises.
- Under Update channel, choose the Office LTSC 2024 channel, which Microsoft's documentation calls PerpetualVL2024, when the PC has Office LTSC 2024 or no Office yet. On a PC with Microsoft 365 Apps, such as the apps from our Office 365 Pro Account, choose the channel that Microsoft 365 Apps uses.
- Under Language, choose English (United States). Microsoft marks English (United Kingdom) as a language that "isn't available in Project or Visio."
- Under Licensing and activation, turn on the option that accepts the licence terms. In the Product key section, select MAK next to Visio and enter your 25-character product key.
- Select Finish, check the summary of your choices, then select Export. If the tool asks about a default file format, keep its suggestion and select OK.
- Accept the licence agreement, name the file visio and select Export.
- Move the file you downloaded into C:\ODT and check that its name is visio.xml.
Run the installation
- Open Start and type cmd. Right-click Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator and select Yes.
- Type cd C:\ODT and press Enter.
- Type setup.exe /configure visio.xml and press Enter.
The installer window shows its progress while it downloads and installs Visio, and the command prompt comes back when it finishes. Open Start, search for Visio and check its activation, as described in Activate Visio Professional 2024.
Retail licence route
- Go to microsoft365.com/setup, sign in with your Microsoft account and enter your product key. Redeeming links Visio to the account, and Microsoft explains that afterwards "you no longer need the product key."
- Go to account.microsoft.com and sign in with the same account. If a work or school account is signed in, sign out first or use a private browser window.
- Select Subscriptions, find Visio Professional 2024 and select Install. To pick the language, or 32-bit or 64-bit to match your Office, select Other options first.
- Open the setup file once it has downloaded, and select Yes when User Account Control asks.
- When setup says you're all set, select Close. Open Start and search for Visio.
Microsoft's page Install Visio or access Visio for the web covers the same installation.
If setup stops
Visio setup stops when its architecture or update channel doesn't match the Office on the PC. Visio won't install alongside Office explains what has to match, and Office error 0-2054 covers that error code.
