Visio won't install alongside Office
Matching architecture, update channel and licence type so Visio and Office can share a PC

Visio and Office share one Click-to-Run installation on a PC, so Microsoft's rules for running them together decide whether Visio installs. They must use the same architecture and the same update channel, and Visio setup stops with an error when either one differs.
Microsoft's rules
- "All installed products must match in bit (32-bit or 64-bit) version. For example, you can't install a 32-bit version of Visio on the same computer with a 64-bit version of Office."
- Microsoft calls the update channel "a device-wide setting" and says "all Office products, including Project and Visio, installed on a device must use the same update channel."
- Office LTSC 2024 has a single channel. Microsoft's documentation says PerpetualVL2024 "is the only update channel available for Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 and Office LTSC Standard 2024", and that it "is also available for volume licensed versions of Project 2024 and Visio LTSC 2024."
- With Microsoft 365 Apps, Visio 2024 "Requires Version 2408 of Microsoft 365 Apps or later", and "Volume licensed Project and Visio installations must be configured to use the same update channel as Microsoft 365 Apps."
- "You can't install two products with the same version but different installation technologies."
Which combinations work
- Office LTSC 2024 Professional Plus or Standard with a volume Visio licence. Works when Visio is set to PerpetualVL2024, the channel Office LTSC 2024 uses, and both have the same architecture.
- Office LTSC 2024 Professional Plus or Standard with a retail Visio key. Doesn't meet the same channel rule. Office LTSC 2024 can't leave PerpetualVL2024, and Microsoft's support staff have explained, for the 2021 versions, that a retail version and a volume version can't be installed on the same PC because retail versions use the Microsoft 365 Apps channels. Contact us with your order number before you install.
- Microsoft 365 Apps, version 2408 or later, with a retail or a volume Visio. Works when both have the same architecture, with a volume Visio set to the same update channel as Microsoft 365 Apps. The apps from our Office 365 Pro Account are Microsoft 365 Apps.
- Office LTSC 2021 or Office 2019, volume licensed. Doesn't meet the same channel rule, because each can only use its own perpetual channel.
- Office 2016 installed with Windows Installer (MSI). Doesn't work, because it shares version 16.0 with Visio 2024 and uses a different installation technology. Remove it first, as Remove older versions of Office before installing explains.
Steps for a volume licence
- In Word, go to File > Account > About Word. The first line of the window ends in 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check the version on Word's Account page. Microsoft 365 Apps needs version 2408 or later, and Update Options > Update Now brings it up to date.
- In the Office Customization Tool, choose the same architecture under Products and releases.
- Choose the update channel that matches the Office on the PC. For Office LTSC 2024 that's the Office LTSC 2024 channel, PerpetualVL2024. For Microsoft 365 Apps it's the channel named on Word's Account page.
- Choose English (United States) as the language.
- Uninstall any older version of Visio and restart the PC.
- Export the file and run setup again from an administrator Command Prompt.
Install Visio Professional 2024 has every step of the volume and retail routes.
Project on the same PC
Project 2024 follows the same rules. With Office, Project and Visio on one PC, all three need the same architecture and the same update channel. Project won't install alongside Office covers Project.
