Error 0-2031 stops Office setup before the apps install. Microsoft lists the related code 17003-2031 on its page for the message "Another installation is in progress", so the first thing to rule out is another Office installation or update running in the background. The code has also been linked to copies of Windows that are far behind on updates, which makes bringing Windows up to date the second step.
Steps
- Look for another installation. Check the notification area at the right of the taskbar for an Office icon and select it to see whether an installation or update is running. Microsoft's advice is that "If an install is already running, wait until it's done before you start your Office install."
- Restart the PC.
- Update Windows. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates and install everything, restarting when asked. Repeat until Windows reports that it's up to date.
- Check the Windows version in Settings > System > About. Office LTSC 2024 supports Windows 11, and Windows 10 only in its LTSC 2021 and LTSC 2019 editions. Windows 11 version 26H2 is the current release.
- Remove any other version of Office, as described in Remove older versions of Office before installing, and restart.
- Run setup again from an administrator Command Prompt.
If setup still stops, Windows Installer may be busy with another task. Office installation is stuck or slow shows how to end a stuck Windows Installer task.
