Office downloads a few gigabytes while it installs, so on a slow connection the progress bar can sit still for a long time with nothing wrong. If it hasn't moved for an hour, or it stops at 90%, work through the steps below. Microsoft explains that a hang at 90% "can occur if Windows Installer is busy".
Steps
1. Check that the download is still running
Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. On the Processes tab, an entry for Microsoft Office Click-to-Run using the network means the download is still going. Give it time.
2. End a stuck Windows Installer task
- In Task Manager, look for Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe).
- If it's there, select it and choose End task.
- Restart the PC and run setup again.
3. Finish Windows updates first
Open Settings > Windows Update, install everything, restart, and check again until nothing is left. A Windows update waiting for a restart can hold Windows Installer and stop Office from installing.
4. Install from a local copy
Download the installation files first, then install from them. Install Office 2024 Professional Plus or Standard shows the /download command and the SourcePath setting. The installation then runs without depending on the connection.
5. Check the space on the system drive
Office installs on the system drive only, and it needs 4 GB free, plus room for the download if you save the installation files first. Check in File Explorer under This PC.
6. Install from a clean boot
A clean boot stops third-party services, including security software, from interfering with setup. Install Office from a clean boot has the steps.
7. Repair Windows system files
Run DISM and System File Checker, as described in Repair Windows system files before installing Office.
Starting over after a stuck installation
If you had to end the installation, restart the PC and check Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Uninstall any half-installed Office entry before you run setup again.
