The setup.exe in the Office Deployment Tool is a command-line tool. On its own it doesn't install anything, because it has to be told what to do and which configuration file to read. Run it from a Command Prompt opened as administrator, with /configure and the name of your configuration file.
The file you download from Microsoft, named officedeploymenttool followed by a version number, doesn't install Office either. It only extracts setup.exe and some sample configuration files into the folder you choose.
Run it from Command Prompt
- Open Start, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run these commands, with your own folder and file name if they're different.
In PowerShell or Windows Terminal, put .\ in front of setup.exe, because PowerShell doesn't run programs from the current folder without it.
Check the files
- configuration.xml has to be in the same folder as setup.exe.
- Turn on View > Show > File name extensions in File Explorer and check that the file isn't named configuration.xml.txt.
- The name you type has to match the file name exactly.
If the command runs and an error code appears, look the code up in Installation problems. The full installation steps are in Install Office 2024 Professional Plus or Standard.
