A clean boot starts Windows with Microsoft's own services and no startup apps. If security software, a backup tool or another background app is interfering with Office setup, installing from a clean boot takes it out of the way. These are Microsoft's steps, with how to undo them afterwards.
Set up the clean boot
- Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
- Press Windows key + R, type msconfig and select OK. System Configuration opens.
- On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all, then Apply.
- On the Startup tab, select Open Task Manager.
- In Task Manager, select each startup app that is enabled and choose Disable.
- Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart the PC.
Install Office
After the restart, open Command Prompt as administrator and run the configure command from your ODT folder, as described in Install Office 2024 Professional Plus or Standard.
Return to normal startup
- Press Windows key + R, type msconfig and select OK.
- On the General tab, select Normal startup.
- On the Services tab, select Enable all, then OK.
- Open Task Manager, go to Startup apps and enable the apps you want to start with Windows.
- Restart the PC.
Microsoft's page How to perform a clean boot in Windows has the same steps with screenshots.
